Neville Richards – it is with deep sadness that we report that Neville died on Christmas night. Neville was a past President, and CEO of the Welsh Bridge Union for many years. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family.
The funeral will be on Thursday 15th January at 11.30 am. It will be a family only green burial at Staunton Greenfields and then a Celebration of Life event at the Corse Lawn Hotel from 12 noon.
In recognition of Neville’s contribution to StepBridgeUK, the national event on Wed 28th January will be free, and prizes will be awarded.

Teltscher Trials – the WBU are looking for expressions of interest in playing the Senior Camrose (Teltscher Trophy) 15-17th May 2026. Players must be aged 65+ on 31st Dec 2026). BridgeMates – many BridgeMate users have experienced difficulties in the past few days, with BCS opening and then immediately closing. This appears to be due to a Windows 11 update, which has affected EBUScore. Full details on how to rectify the situation have been posted on the EBU website Connectivity Issues.
(You need to download all the EBUScore or ClubScore components (if relevant). Other scoring software – ScoreBridge etc. does not appear to be affected). It is not necessary to download the latest version of BCS.

Frances Williams – Many members in West Wales and beyond will be sad to hear the news that Frances Williams, affectionately known as San, has passed away. She was highly thought of in bridge circles, and played in both Llanelli and Carmarthen clubs. She also set up and very successfully ran Llandybie Bridge club, which swelled so greatly that new members couldn’t be accommodated at one time! The club sadly was ended by Covid and then disrepair to their venue. Frances has been ill for quite some time, but continued to play at Carmarthen club until she went into hospital several weeks ago. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family.

WBF World Tour – Strong performance by Plackett and Erichsen in the WBF World Tour final which is taking place at the moment in Memphis Tennessee, featuring 16 pairs who performed outstandingly well in 2024. After the first day of two, British pair Espen Erichsen and Richard Plackett are in second place, just behind Americans Joe Grue and Brad Moss. And they really are only just behind: the difference is only 0.1 IMPs. Play continues all day Thursday. There are two ways to follow the play, starting at about 3.30pm UK time. The Oliver Cowan Dragon Swiss Pairs series (Green Pointed) returns on Saturday February 15th at 1pm for the normal 6 x 6 board rounds. Each player’s best 5 scores will count towards their final total but players can play in as many or as few sessions as they like as each game is a separate tournament.The game is open to members of ALL home nations. The game does not count towards NGS as it is under the run by the WBU.

Teltscher Trophy – unfortunately there were insufficient pairs to hold a trial this year, so the selectors have chosen Adrian Thomas & Andy Hughes; John Salisbury & Tim Rees; Paul Lamford & Gary Jones (npc – Andrea Knox) to represent Wales.
The event will be held in Gormanston, Ireland, on May 16th– 18th.
