The current WBU policy regading recognition is: any WBU member where this was requested by their club or another WBU member with sensitivity to their family (ideally checking with the family that this was OK).
Roy Holmes – a member of Monty, has died aged 101. He was last at the club on 24th June, had a fall at home a few days later and was taken to hospital where he said “I can’t stay here long, I’ve got Bridge on Monday. Sadly he didn’t make it.
Roy was an RAF veteran of WW2, flying Lancaster Bombers – a real character.

Glyn Meredith – we have just been informed of the sudden death of Glyn Meredith. He moved to Wales in 2022, and became a popular and successful player on the South Wales circuit – his friendliness at the table was legendary. He was Chairman of Cardiff BC. Sarah Amos has written an Obituary.

Herbie Rowley – it is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Herbie Rowley. In addition to being a founder member of Cardigan Bridge Club, Herbie was a past President of the Welsh Bridge Union in 2013-14, and Chairman of the Mid-Wales Bridge Association. More details to follow.

Jill Knight – It is with sadness that we have to announce that Jill Knight has recently passed away. Jill twice played Lady Milne and for many years was the editor of the WBU newsletter . She was also match manager for Camrose matches from time to time.

John Beard – it is with sadness that we have to announce the death of John Beard. John was a very popular player throughout the UK, and represented Wales on two occasions at the European Championships. He was recognised as being one of the first to provide organised holidays for all standards of player. A ‘Celebration of His Life’ will be held at the New House Country Hotel Cardiff, CF149UA – Nov. 25th – 3.00pm – 6.00pm. All invited to share memories.

Judith Graham-Jones – it is with sadness that we would like to inform members of the passing of Judith Graham-Jones a staunch and loyal member of the WBU and Haverfordwest Bridge Club.
Judith was Chair of Haverfordwest Bridge Club numerous times as well as Chair of the Western Area on two occasions.
She also served twice as President of the Welsh Bridge Union. She was well respected and liked throughout the principality and will be missed by her many friends.

Pat Haworth – It is with sadness that we have to announce the passing-away of Pat Haworth – 83 years young. Bridge was very much a part of Pat’s life, being an active member and President of Porthcawl Bridge Club. During her 60+ year bridge career, she represented Wales in the Lady Milne in 1981 (profile), and won the Welsh Cup (1983), the Cambria Cup (1982), and Ladies Welsh Cup (1985), competitions.
Our thoughts are with her husband Tony, three children, five grand-children, and lately one great-grand-child.
The funeral will be on Tues. 12th July, at 12.45pm. in Margam Crematorium.

Filip Kurbalija – It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Filip Kurbalija aged 67, following a brief illness. Filip had an outstanding record representing Wales over four decades both in Home Internationals (55 Camrose and 4 Teltscher ‘caps’), and European Championships (5 ‘caps’). He was a tower in Welsh bridge and had won every Welsh national tournament many times over, as well as having success in major English events. Fil was a hugely respected member of the bridge world and will be missed by his many friends. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife and bridge partner, Diane. Colin Heard. It is with sadness that the WBU announces that Colin Heard has died. Aged 85, he suffered from cancer for the past few years. Colin was a regular Camrose player between 1969 and 1980, playing in a total of 14 matches. The funeral is at 11.00am. on 11th September in Llanelli Crematorium, with the wake at the Diplomat hotel. We send our condolences to his wife Hazel.

Austin Barnes (1945-2021) – It is with sadness that we announce that Austin Barnes passed away this morning, after a few years of illness. He was a regular Welsh Camrose International in the 1970’s and 80’s, and a major contributor to Lancashire CBA and especially to Bolton BC. He won a prestigious Dimmie Fleming Award in 2019 (photo). Away from bridge, he was a leading world authority on magnetic resonance spectography, with 122 research papers at Salford University, and a special edition of Journal Molecules was published to celebrate his 75th birthday. Monica Garbett-Edwards (Randles). We are saddened to hear that Monica recently passed-away (Feb 12th). She was a prodigy of Jessie Newton, with whom she was a regular partner in the Welsh International Ladies Teams, during the 1970’s and 80’s. Photo of Monica in the Lady Milne Team (pictured to the right of the team captain Dr. Arwyn Evans) – St. Bride’s Hotel – Saundersfoot 1981. Following her illustrious playing career, she was Secretary to the WBU selectors as well undertaking various roles within the North Wales Bridge Association. A keen member of Newtown Bridge Club, she ended her bridge career some 6 or 7 years ago, shortly before leaving the Area to join her sister at the family home in Rossett. We offer our condolences.

Mike Hirst – It is with sadness we hear of the loss of Mike Hirst – aged 86. A giant in the Welsh Bridge world, Mike had an illustrious Camrose career, winning forty two Welsh Caps with several partners. Very well known, he really was a larger than life character. He had been a member of Cardiff Bridge club for almost sixty years. Also in his earlier days Mike had been a fine golfer. He will be much missed. Our deepest condolences go to Ann. Obituary

Dr. Roy Griffin – the WBU are saddened to hear of the death of Roy Griffin – 95 years young. He was President of the WBU 1970-71, as well as Chairman and President of his beloved Swansea Bridge Club. As a player, from 1955 he represented Wales on eight occasions. His lecturing skills at Swansea University helped him pioneer Bridgerama graphic displays (a fore-runner to the present day VuGraph), as well as probably the first computerised Scoring Program, many of the concepts being apparent in modern day programs. A gentleman of Bridge – will be sadly missed.
