Special General Meeting – (Re-scheduled) – the WBU give notice of a Special General Meeting on Saturday 14th January at 10.00 am – Zoom, with the proposal that paragraph 5.0 of the Constitution relating to annual subscriptions be changed. See Proposal Details.
The proposal was passed at the meeting – “The annual subscriptions shall be determined by the Management Committee”.

Christmas Bridge – the WBU have no major competitions running over the Christmas period, but you are still able to participate in the popular StepBridgeUK tournaments. These are run on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – starting at 7.00pm. – £1.00. The only ‘non-event’ over this period is Sunday – Christmas Day. Also the event on New Year’s Day will be free entry. Hope to see you at one of the events.

Teltscher Trials players are invited to enter the WBU PAIRS TRIAL for the 2023 Teltscher Trophy taking place in Wales next May in the Holiday Inn Hotel, Newport. Should you qualify to represent either Wales or the WBU in this event there are additional hotel costs of £330 per player. The trials will take place over the weekend of 4th & 5th February 2023 at the Commodore Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. The entry fee is £100 per pair, and the Commodore Hotel are offering discounted hotel accommodation.The CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES is December 31st. More details are on the Entry form.

Lady Milne Trials – pairs are now invited to enter the WBU Trials for the 2023 LADY MILNE taking place in Scotland next April. The PAIRS TRIAL will take place over the weekend of 21st & 22nd January 2023 at the Commodore Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. The entry fee is £100 per pair, and the Commodore Hotel are offering discounted hotel accommodation. The revised closing date for entries is 24th December 2022. More details are on the Entry Form.

Welsh & Cambria Competitions 2023 – The WBU Welsh and Cambria Cup competitions for 2023 will initially be held online. The draw will be done on a National basis, and the only non-regional travelling may be for the finals later in the year (undecided as to whether these will be online or FtoF). A ‘double elimination’ system will operate, ensuring any team must lose two matches before being eliminated. There are generous Green Point awards, based on the result of 8/10-board stanzas, so you can lose the match, but still win Green Points. John Beard – it is with sadness that we have to announce the death of John Beard. John was a very popular player throughout the UK, and represented Wales on two occasions at the European Championships. He was recognised as being one of the first to provide organised holidays for all standards of player. A ‘Celebration of His Life’ will be held at the New House Country Hotel Cardiff, CF149UA – Nov. 25th – 3.00pm – 6.00pm. All invited to share memories.

Junior Bridge Camp – With the start of the new school year, the Autumn Junior Bridge Camp will take place near Tunbridge Wells on 22nd and 23rd October. Parents and teachers are encouraged to ask youngsters to participate. It is a great way to get them along the learning curve fast because they will play lots of bridge. See Youth Camp Details

Regulations – the EBU has made changes to its Regulations (which the WBU automatically follows).  The revised full set of Regulations can be viewed on this website (->Directing/Scoring->Documents->Publications) or via Publications.
The ‘Blue Book’ covers Regulations regarding systems, conventions, alerting etc. and Club players are expected to comply with the simpler concepts. A simple summary of the relevant changes can be viewed at – Blue Book Changes – Simplified. A copy of this summary will be sent to all Club secretaries.
The ‘White Book’ deals with more technical issues, and is only suitable for senior Directors and the L&E Committee.
The ‘Sky Blue Book’ dealing with online bridge, has now been incorporated into the Blue Book.
(Directors are requested to be tolerant to mistakes over the next few months).

Calendar – our new NTO – Simon Gottschalk – has taken a fresh approach to the calendar of WBU events. Recognising that Online Bridge is here to stay, there will now be two versions of most National events – face-to-face, and online (separate dates).
Also most events will be run in two sections (numbers permitting) – an open section, and a secondary section restricted to players ranked below life-master (150GPs), who feel overwhelmed when competing against the ‘better-players’. The first of these events is the National Online Pairs on November 5th. Entry Forms now available.

Judith Graham-Jones – it is with sadness that we would like to inform members of the passing of Judith Graham-Jones a staunch and loyal member of the WBU and Haverfordwest Bridge Club.
Judith was Chair of Haverfordwest Bridge Club numerous times as well as Chair of the Western Area on two occasions.
She also served twice as President of the Welsh Bridge Union. She was well respected and liked throughout the principality and will be missed by her many friends.

WBU President – The WBU extends a warm welcome to its new president – Gilly Clench. Gilly is a leading Welsh ladies international, at both UK and European levels, and has done much to promote ladies bridge throughout Wales – we wish her every success. Also at the AGM, a ‘new team’ of officials has been appointed: Simon Gottschalk – National Tournament Organiser; Jean Cufley – Treasurer. We wish them all every success in administering and encouraging bridge in Wales.
The WBU would also extend their thanks and appreciation to the retiring officers – Marie Topp, Jean Hand, and Fiona Noyce, for their hard work over many years, and in particular over the very trying conditions during the past couple of years of pandemic. They have had to manage the synergy between face-to-face and online bridge, and have done so with enthusiasm and professionalism.

Pat Haworth – It is with sadness that we have to announce the passing-away of Pat Haworth – 83 years young. Bridge was very much a part of Pat’s life, being an active member and President of Porthcawl Bridge Club. During her 60+ year bridge career, she represented Wales in the Lady Milne in 1981 (profile), and won the Welsh Cup (1983), the Cambria Cup (1982), and Ladies Welsh Cup (1985), competitions.
Our thoughts are with her husband Tony, three children, five grand-children, and lately one great-grand-child.
The funeral will be on Tues. 12th July, at 12.45pm. in Margam Crematorium.

European Championships – the 55th European Championships are now underway in Funchal. The championships include Open, Mixed, Ladies, and Seniors events.
In the Open event Wales are represented by Gary Jones & Paul Lamford; Richard Plackett & Paul Denning; Julian Pottage & Tony Ratcliff.
In the Ladies event, Laura Woodruff & Gilly Clench; Ceri Pierce & Sophie Cunningham, are representing Wales.
Ceri & Sophie qualified for the final of the Ladies Pairs, finishing midway in the final rankings.
The Open team finished an impressive 20th in a very strong final field.

The Teltscher Trophy is currently scheduled to be held in Northern Ireland over the weekend 20th – 22nd May 2022. However, a decision will be made by BGB on or before 18th February 2022 as to whether the event will be moved online using the RealBridge platform. If the Teltscher Trophy is moved to an online format, then the selectors will reserve the right to re-evaluate the team and consider other interested pairs.
Unfortunately Barry and Bob have had to withdraw, and have been replaced by Gilly Clench and David Birt. The event will take-place, f-to-f, in Northern Ireland, but you can kibitz the match via Kibitz Link.

StepBridge – For the past couple of years StepBridge have provided their online platform at no cost to players nor clubs. As evidenced by the number of player participations, this has proved to be a highly popular platform for both Club and UK Tournaments (four per week). However increasing costs (servers, development, etc.), now necessitate some minimal charging to be levied. As from March 28th, all StepbridgeUK Clubs (except casual, youth, and teaching) and UK events, will require a table money charge; UK Events – £1, Club events – minimum of £0.50p. Any profits will be for the benefit of UK Bridge. Full details can be found on the StepBridgeUK Website or Player Information or Club Information.
We hope that existing StepBridge members continue to enjoy their online bridge, and new Members and Clubs are welcome to enrol (no membership nor joining fees) – see StepBridgeUK Website.

Subscriptions – the WBU would like to remind all members that WBU subsriptions are due from April 1st. The fee has been maintained at pre-pandemic level – £10, (all areas are temporarily suspending their subscriptions). Members can renew via their affiliated Clubs (where permitting) as in previous years, but recognising the practicalities in doing this prior to a return to ‘normal’ Club activity, they can alternatively use the personal online Renewal Form. For more information, please refer to Membership Details. Also for the numerous visitors that our online Clubs have welcomed, we would encourage them to apply for permanent WBU membership via the WBU Application Form (members who joined after Jan 1st will have their membership automatically renewed at no charge). Clubs can also submit a bulk membership renewal on behalf of their members – Bulk Renewals via Club.

EBL – Ukraine – the Austrian Bridge Federation is organising a fund raising tournament for the people in Ukraine on March 20th, 7pm CET. It will be played as a one session pairs event (approximately 30 boards) online on RealBridge. The entire proceeds go to the Caritas emergency aid for Ukraine. The entry fee is €25 per pair pair. Date Change – Due to the clash with the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend the WBU have re-scheduled the AGM, Perry, Spickett, and Presidents Cup to 9th – 10th July – at the Commodore Hotel, Llandrindod Wells. It is intended that the AGM be a hybrid event (Zoom + FtoF).

European Teams – now underway – the 55th European National Teams Championships will be held in Funchal in Madeira from 12th – 22nd June. The Event will also include Women’s, Senior’s and Mixed Teams events, from 16th – 22nd June, and Women’s and Senior’s Pairs between 12th-15th June. For further details see European Teams
Players interested in playing in any of these events should inform the Selectors with an expression of interest. Some limited funding may be available to cover the Entry Fee for the Teams events.

Filip Kurbalija Memorial Game – Diane and Patrick Shields, a good friend of Filip, have made plans to have a game on RealBridge on the evening of Friday 25th February in Filip’s memory. They would like as many as knew him and can play, to come along.
The game is being organised through the Gloucester County Bridge Association, in whose events Filip played regularly during lockdown. For full details see Memorial Game.

Online League – the 7th Geoff Evans Online League has now completed – Final Results. Junior’s Event – the second annual online (RealBridge) pairs event for juniors, will this year be hosted by England on behalf of BGB. The home nations event will take place on Sunday 20th March, with free entry. Depending on numbers, there will be two separate events – Under 26 (for the Liz McGowan trophy) and Under 21 (for the Paul Porteous trophy).
It is hoped to be able to present these in person the next time a home international event is held in the country of the winning pair. Mixed pairs of U21 and U26 are welcome but will be expected to play in the U26 category.

Filip’s funeral will be held on Tuesday 25th January at 2pm at Thornhill Crematorium Cardiff. It is a small private service for invited family and close friends only. Please no flowers, but donations to the RSPB. Pat Shields is organising a memorial online bridge event – more details to follow. Diane expresses her thanks for all the warm tributes and many messages of sympathy.
